What are kidneys?
You have two kidneys.
Your kidneys clean your blood.
Your kidneys also make urine to get rid of things your body does not need.
Infections happen when germs get inside your body and make you sick.
Germs are tiny living things that cause infections.
Sometimes germs make us sick.
If germs get into your kidneys, you can develop a kidney infection and become sick.
You may have a kidney infection if you:
- Feel pain in your back or side

Anyone can get a kidney infection, but you are at extra risk if:
- You use a catheter (a tube that helps urine leave your body)

You are also at extra risk of getting a kidney infection if you:
