- Have a family or household meeting. Discuss what possible emergencies you could face such as fire, earthquake or severe weather.
- Find spots in your home that will be a safe place for each emergency
- Draw a floor plan and mark two ways to get out of every room
- Discuss what to do about electric power blackouts or personal injuries
- Post emergency telephone numbers by each phone
- Have battery operated radios available and turn them on in an emergency to get instructions
- Designate a meeting place outside the house where everyone knows to meet in the event of a fire
- Pick a place to meet outside of your neighborhood in case you cannot get home
- Take a basic first aid and CPR class
- Keep records in water and fire proof containers
